Starting on Your Journey to Supporting Children's Mental Health

Childhood Mental Health

By

In today's fast-paced world, parents and caregivers face a range of challenges in nurturing their children's mental health and well-being. A recent study from Smiling Mind presented a concerning statistic: only 1 in 2 parents feel confident in meeting the mental health and well-being needs of their child. This shows how important it is to find ways to help parents feel more sure of themselves.

More children are struggling with mental health issues, which makes it tough for families to find the support they need. It's hard for parents because there aren't enough easy-to-use resources to help them recognise and handle their children's mental health problems, and there's a gap in ways to help kids build mental strength to deal with life's challenges.

When caregivers feel equipped and confident in supporting their children's emotional needs, they can create an environment that fosters resilience and positive mental health outcomes.

So, where can caregivers start?

By implementing these strategies, caregivers can create a supportive environment that nurtures their children's mental well-being:

  • Fostering Open Communication: Encouraging kids to express their thoughts and feelings openly can strengthen the parent-child bond and create a supportive atmosphere where children feel valued and understood. Effective communication also helps parents identify and address any concerns or challenges their children may be facing.

  • Encouraging Physical Activity: Regular physical activity is essential for children's overall health and well-being. It not only promotes physical fitness but also helps reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function. By encouraging kids to be active, parents can support their mental health and instil healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

  • Promoting Healthy Sleep Habits: Quality sleep is vital for children's mental and physical development. Establishing consistent bedtime routines, limiting the use of electronic devices and creating a conducive sleep environment can help children get the rest they need to thrive. A good night's sleep boosts mood, enhances concentration, and supports emotional regulation, all of which contribute to better mental well-being.

Statistics also reveal holes in the accessibility of resources and services that children need in order to develop positive mental wellbeing tools. These holes are equally prevalent in parents’ access to trusted resources which would allow them to support their child in developing these tools. Over one in five (22%) parents find it difficult to find resources and information they trust about their children’s mental health. Over one in three (37%) parents find it difficult accessing mental health and wellbeing support for their child.

Programs and a range of parent resources are offered by Parentshop. Caregivers can utilise these resources to build skills for supporting good mental health at home.

Remember, supporting children's mental well-being is a journey, and every small step counts.
