Whole-School Approach to Managing Anxiety

Through Parentshop’s programmes targeting anxiety, Parentshop seeks to lift the skills of school leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and parents recognising anxiety in students and responding to anxious behaviours. In this way we will support the efficacy of schools in supporting the achievement of high-level outcomes by students.

Parentshop is working with a number of schools to manage anxiety in a Whole-School Community Approach - how can we help your school?

Anxiety Coach – Primary School Project

Anxiety coach – primary school project

The Anxiety Coach, Whole-School program takes a wrap around approach to help children learn skills to manage anxiety and build resilience by engaging the significant adults in their life in training. The program is consistent with the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework (ASWF) and includes:

  • Providing training and resource for implementation coaches (Anxiety Champions), teachers and parents to ensure they always have access to the latest research and resilience practices available to them.
  • Helping schools connect with their communities to ensure there is a whole-of-school cultural change to addressing anxiety, improving school attendance and improving student engagement and performance.
  • In its teacher format, the Anxiety Coach program assists educators to identify and to manage child anxiety. Elements of the curriculum include:
  • Noting the differences between anxiety disorders and normal anxiety,
  • Which family and teacher management behaviours are correlated with worsening anxiety,
  • How different types of anxiety respond to different treatments,
  • How the adults in the child’s environment can assist children to become mentally stronger,
  • The types of conversational interventions teachers can use facilitate resilience-thinking skills and which need to be formally taught (e.g., arousal reduction and interrupting techniques).

The Anxiety Project – For NSWPPA Primary Schools

The anxiety project – for nswppa primary schools

New South Wales Primary Principals' Association (NSWPPA) has developed a program to address high levels of anxiety among children in New South Wales. NSWPPA proposes that any solution for childhood anxiety will need to address a number of factors and populations. The following will be addressed by building the capacity of school leaders, teachers, SLSOs and parents to reduce children’s anxiety levels in NSW schools: Link to more information:

  • School Leaders - through professional learning for school leaders they will design protocols and establish a culture within their schools aimed at helping children build resilience.
  • Implementation Coaches (ICs) - through having ICs in schools it will be possible to support teachers (through in-class mentoring) and parents (through the provision of parent education groups).
  • Teachers - through the provision of professional learning for teachers it will be possible to counter anxiety habits in children, as they arise in the school environment.
  • School Learning Support Staff (SLSOs) – through the provision of professional learning for SLSOs it will be possible to counter anxious behaviour in a one-on-one setting with those children needing additional support.
  • Parents - by providing family management training for parents, we can equip parents to better deal with a child’s mild-level anxiety at home.
